ACP + Google AP2: What Every D2C Brand Needs to Know

OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google's AP2 just changed the rules. Machine-readable product feeds are now the new SEO.

The protocol layer nobody told you about

In 2024 and 2025, two major AI commerce protocols launched that fundamentally changed how products get discovered by AI agents. Most D2C brand operators have never heard of either of them. That's the problem.

ACP โ€” OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol โ€” is the pipeline through which product data flows into ChatGPT's shopping layer. Google AP2 (now operating under the Unified Commerce Protocol / UCP umbrella) is how product data flows into Google AI Mode and Gemini shopping responses.

These aren't SEO tactics. They're infrastructure.

What ACP actually is

ACP is OpenAI's formal specification for how brands submit product catalog data to ChatGPT's shopping layer. It defines the data format ChatGPT expects, attribute completeness requirements for recommendation eligibility, update frequency requirements, and the verification process for brand identity.

Brands with ACP approval and compliant feeds appear in ChatGPT shopping responses. Brands without it are limited to whatever ChatGPT can infer from web crawls โ€” significantly less reliable.

The practical implication: ACP isn't just about visibility. It's about accuracy. A properly submitted ACP feed means ChatGPT shows correct pricing, current availability, and accurate product attributes. A non-ACP brand might appear occasionally โ€” but with stale prices or missing attributes.

What Google AP2 / UCP means

Google's UCP is the equivalent infrastructure for Google's AI ecosystem โ€” AI Mode, Gemini, and Google Shopping's AI-enhanced surfaces.

The critical difference from standard Google Shopping: UCP requires structured data depth that goes significantly beyond a standard Shopping feed. Standard feeds were designed for human-readable search results. UCP feeds are designed for AI agents parsing buyer intent.

Your existing Google Shopping feed is not sufficient for AI Mode visibility. You need a UCP-compliant feed with enriched attribute data and category-specific structured fields.

The compounding advantage of early compliance

Brands that achieve AI protocol compliance early are building a compounding advantage. AI agents learn from recommendation outcomes โ€” products that get recommended and purchased generate positive feedback signals that influence future recommendation weighting.

Brands with 0% AI Share of Voice today aren't just missing current traffic. They're missing the feedback loop that determines recommendation positioning for years.

What you need to do now

Audit your current catalog data against ACP and UCP attribute requirements for your category. Identify the specific gaps. Prioritize enrichment of your top 20 SKUs. Submit an ACP application. Update your Merchant Center feed with UCP-required attributes.
