PRODUCT DATA GUIDE

A practical guide to product data for AI shopping and search

What Shopify brands should improve on product pages, in structured data and in category-specific attributes—without relying on shortcuts or guarantees.

Start with the right premise

There is no single “AI-ready” tag that guarantees a recommendation. Search engines and AI shopping experiences can use a combination of visible product-page information, structured data, product feeds, reviews, third-party sources and the shopper’s actual question.

The practical goal is simpler: make every important product fact accurate, specific and consistent wherever it appears.

1. Complete the facts a shopper needs to decide

A product title and a marketing description are rarely enough. Put decision-making facts in a clear form on the product page.

  • Apparel: material composition, fit, measurements, care and intended use.
  • Skincare: ingredient list, active ingredients, concentration where appropriate, skin suitability and usage directions.
  • Supplements: ingredient amount per serving, form, dietary information, allergen information and substantiated certifications.
  • Home: dimensions, materials, assembly, compatibility and care.

2. Keep visible content and structured data aligned

Structured data is a standard way to describe a page. Google recommends Product markup for relevant product pages, but markup must represent the visible page accurately. It should support the page—not contradict it.

For Shopify brands, that means keeping title, price, availability, variants and key product facts consistent between Shopify data, the product page and any product feed.

3. Use structured fields for facts that repeat across a catalog

Shopify metafields are useful when a product fact needs a dedicated field rather than being buried in a paragraph. They make it easier to keep category-specific information consistent across many products and to review gaps systematically.

Do not create fields merely to increase a score. Add fields that help a real shopper compare, filter or confidently choose a product.

4. Improve the top products first

Start with the products that have the most traffic, sales potential or strategic importance. Audit the existing facts, select the missing fields, review factual changes, then publish. This is safer and more useful than rewriting an entire catalog at once.

What Vialtry helps with

Vialtry audits Shopify product information against category-specific attribute frameworks, identifies missing factual information and prepares improvements for review. The aim is clearer catalog data—not a promise that a specific AI system will recommend a product.
